Parent Involvement at GIS
Parents are a vital part of the Gwangju International School community, and we encourage every family to participate in supporting our students, faculty, and school activities. Our Parent Association (PA) and Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) help foster an engaged and vibrant school environment through both formal and informal opportunities.
Parent Association (PA)
As a GIS parent, you’re automatically part of the Parent Association, which works closely with the school to support the academic and social experience of every student. The PA also strengthens connections among families, helping new and existing parents build a welcoming network.
What Does the Parent Association Do?
- Supports students, parents, and school activities for a richer school experience.
- Organizes activities, such as parent socials, cultural events, and annual gatherings like the Thanksgiving Dinner and Graduation Banquet.
- Discusses school developments, policies, and community initiatives, creating a positive atmosphere where everyone feels valued.
Who Can Join? Every parent is a welcome part of the PA, contributing unique talents and time as available. Together, parents enhance our school community, creating lifelong connections and lasting memories for our students.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
The GIS Parent-Teacher Organization focuses on strengthening the partnership between parents and educators. Through activities, fundraising, and special events, the PTO enriches students’ experiences and provides support for school projects.
PTO Contributions Include:
- Fundraising for school programs, equipment, and resources.
- Organizing events that foster school spirit and parent engagement, like the International Festival and other community celebrations.
- Providing additional volunteer support for teachers and students during special events.
Note : While the PTO promotes community involvement, it does not address individual student or classroom concerns. For those, please contact the main office to schedule a direct conference with the teacher.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
We hold official Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTCs) at the end of the first and third quarters. These conferences provide an ideal setting for parents to discuss their child’s academic progress, social-emotional development, and overall well-being with teachers. Additional meetings can be arranged throughout the year as needed.
