GIS HISTORY

Founding and Early Years (1999-2012)

Gwangju International School (GIS) opened its doors in March 1999, becoming the first foreign educational institution in Gwangju, South Korea. Founded by Robert Holley, an international lawyer, educator, and television personality in South Korea, GIS was established to meet the growing need for an international education in the region. The school began its journey with an initial enrollment of 25 students, providing them with a high-quality American curriculum.

In August 2000, GIS received official approval and recognition from the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, marking a significant milestone as the first foreign school to be formally recognized in the region. This endorsement allowed GIS to expand its offerings and continue providing a comprehensive education to both Korean and international students.

In 2003, GIS achieved accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), affirming its commitment to maintaining high academic standards and delivering an exceptional educational experience.

Expansion and Modernization (2012-Present)

As the school grew, so did its reputation for academic excellence and diversity. For 13 years, GIS operated from its original campus in Yangsan-Dong, nurturing a vibrant community of learners from around the world. In 2012, to accommodate the growing student body and to provide state-of-the-art facilities, GIS relocated to a modern campus in Oryong-Dong, adjacent to the prestigious Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST).

The new campus features cutting-edge facilities designed to support a dynamic learning environment, enabling students to explore their interests and develop their potential in an inspiring setting.

Today, Gwangju International School continues to thrive as a Pre-K–12 institution, serving a diverse population of students from over 30 nationalities. The school remains committed to providing an American curriculum that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and character necessary to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. With over two decades of excellence, GIS stands as a leader in international education in the JeollaDo region.
